Overview: The Halal Food Scanner & Ingredients Analyzer is a free community service provided by Associazione Studenti Musulmani - Politecnico di Milano (ASM POLIMI) to assist university students, staff, and visitors in Milan and across Italy in evaluating food items for potential non-halal or questionable ingredients.
1. Informational & Decision-Support Aid Only
ASM POLIMI is a non-profit university student association registered at Politecnico di Milano. ASM POLIMI is not a commercial food inspection laboratory, Halal certification body, or religious authority.
- The scanner provides algorithmic, keyword-based keyword matching based on crowdsourced databases and community submissions.
- Results generated by the scanner (e.g. Halal, Haram, Mashbuh / Questionable) are purely informational guidelines and do not constitute a formal religious edict (fatwa) or official Halal certificate.
2. Physical Packaging Label Takes Precedence
Food manufacturing formulations, ingredients, and processing aids change frequently and without warning.
- Recipe Modifications: Manufacturers often change ingredient sources (e.g., switching between plant-derived and animal-derived mono- and diglycerides or gelatin) or produce different regional batches under the same barcode without updating online public records.
- Sole Definitive Source: The physical ingredient label printed directly on the product packaging at the time and place of purchase is always the sole definitive and binding source of product information.
- Users must always physically read the product package and look for recognized, verified Halal certification marks on meat and processed items.
3. Camera Privacy & Client-Side Stream (GDPR Compliance)
When utilizing the Live Camera Scan feature:
- 100% Local In-Browser Processing: Video frames captured by your camera viewfinder are processed directly on your device inside your browser using client-side WebAssembly / JavaScript decoding.
- Zero Recording or Server Uploads: No video feeds, photographic snapshots, or imagery of your surroundings are ever recorded, saved, stored, or transmitted to ASM POLIMI servers or third-party cloud systems.
- Revocable Permissions: Camera access is active only while the viewfinder modal is actively open and can be revoked at any time via your browser permissions menu.
4. Data Sources & Third-Party APIs
When a barcode is scanned or entered, only the numeric barcode string (e.g., EAN-13 digits) is queried:
- Open Food Facts: Public product data is retrieved from the Open Food Facts API, published under the Open Database License (ODbL). ASM POLIMI does not guarantee the completeness or absolute accuracy of third-party public records.
- ASM Local Cache: Custom product statuses reviewed and verified by student association admins.
- Optional Community Reports: If you submit an unlisted product or correction, only product metadata (barcode, name, brand, store address, ingredient notes) is submitted. No student matricola, personal identity, or contact details are required or attached.
5. Limitation of Liability
To the maximum extent permitted by applicable Italian and European law:
- ASM POLIMI, its board members, administrators, and volunteer developers shall not be held liable for any dietary, health, allergic, religious, or financial consequences resulting from reliance on the scanner's output or database discrepancies.
- The service is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis without warranties of any kind, express or implied.
6. Corrections & Contact
